Getting started with neurofeedback

The basics

Although neurofeedback has been in existence since 1970, few people know about it, let alone understand how it works. It is a complex subject because it deals with the brain. And it is also complex, because there are different types of neurofeedback. The following is an attempt to explain some of the basic concepts to hopefully not only demystify, but unleash the power of neurofeedback.

What is neurofeedback?

Neurofeedback, also called EEG biofeedback or neurotherapy, is form of brain training. It trains the brain to be more balanced. It retrains the brain to help let go of unhealthy patterns. It helps the brain to create more plasticity and create new neural pathways.

Recent research shows that neurofeedback induces changes not only in the white matter (myelin) of the brain, but also in the grey matter (neurons). Just a few years ago, scientists and neurologists believed that the brain can’t change. It was believed that when neurons die, they are gone and can’t be regenerated. This study proves that with neurofeedback, the brain can change and regenerate.
